Remembering Waiting For Our Baby

This blurb is from my journal back in the day before I knew about blogging. Since we are into the month of December I always remember waiting for Maizie to be born and how excited I was. It seems like such a long time ago. Tonight Maizie had her first sleep over at a friend's house. She is growing up! I feel happy and sad all at the same time. Before she left she said, "I will miss you while I am gone Momma." So sweet! Joe looks so young in this photo. Here is the excerpt from my journal......
On December 9th our adoption counselor called and left a message that she knew the sex of the baby. We played phone tag and I thought I was going to lose my mind. Pure torture. We are having a baby girl! Maizie Marie! I am so excited. I still feel a deep level of uncertainty. Every day I imagine what the birth mother is doing and I feel like I can't wait another day. We are so close to the due date. I can't focus on much of anything. I am a mess. I feel separated from someone I all ready love. Is that normal? Am I putting all my eggs in one basket? This feeling is difficult to accept since I know the birth mother could change her mind. Our hearts could be broken and we would have to accept that. I know that God will get us through this waiting.

Decorating the Tree......Maizie Can Finally Sleep Knowing it's Done!

For two weeks I have been hearing this, "Look Momma! They have their Christmas lights up! Where is our tree?!" And many other variations of the same idea. In other words, "Mom! Get up off your butt and get the tree out and decorated!"

So, tonight we finally brought out the tree and decorated it. Maizie loves this tradition. She is all about decorations. We will drive by the tackiest homes with lights and big blow up Christmas decorations and she says, "Look! Why don't we do that?" The child who hates lights and over stimulation is at the same time drawn to it in all of its tacky glory.
This ornament was my Grandmother Mercedes on my dad's side. My parents used to have quite a few of them. Mercedes collected them. I am lucky enough to have two of them. Once I looked for more on the Internet but had no luck. The only thing written on it is 'Ardult' and 'Japan'. Maybe one of these days I will come across some more of these beauties.

Maizie and I had lots of fun dressing Stella up tonight in her Santa costume. Maizie could not stop laughing. I think I am going to use the picture for our family Christmas card. I want so badly to post it! I am pretty happy with it. But, if I post it my family will see it and when they open the card it will go like this, "Oh...yeah...we saw that picture all ready." I rather they sound all excited like! Kinda like this, "Ohhhhhhh! That is so adorable! I am going to put this card where everyone will see it! That Marla.....so creative."

Hee! Hee! If I can keep these photos under wraps it will be a miracle. Okay, so to satisfy my photo urge I am going to post just a portion of the photo.

Play Doh, Respect and Chuck E. Cheese

I got a text this morning from my friend Mindy who has been job searching for a long time. She found a job! I am truly happy for her and at the same time I wanted to cry. I had so enjoyed hanging out with her a day a week or so. Maralyn and Maizie were playing great together. Some days it can get kinda lonely being an at home mom. I know that I have other friends to hang with but Mindy has always worked full time. So being able to spend this much time together was great. Oh, well. We just have to go back to lunches, evenings or weekends. Obviously my moping is not what is important. The most important thing is Mindy found a job! I am really happy for her. I will miss her and the kids though.

After lunch Maizie and I went over to Janeen's house. Maizie and Savonna played with playdoh. Savonna likes to eat playdoh. Every time Janeen would walk out of the room she would grab a little tiny glob of green play doh, lick it and pop it in her mouth. It was quite entertaining to watch. I tried to discourage her playdoh eating fun but she really did not seem to take my advice. The lure of the doh was too intense!

Once back home Maizie went back to playing her out of tune lap harp. I was in the kitchen when Maizie spells out my name.

Maizie:M. O. M.!!!!!!

Marla:(laughing) What?

Maizie:I DON'T think you will laugh when I tell you this.

Marla: (Silence...wondering what went wrong....immediately picturing my lap top wet again.)

Maizie: I didn't treat the harp respectfully.

I just love love love the way she spoke about not treating it respectfully. Too cute!

One of the strings had snapped. Maizie was so afraid of getting in trouble. Joe was able to fix it easily. Tonight when I went to take it to Brian's to be tuned she said, "I sure hope he does not lose it!"

Can you tell she loves the harp? Tonight when we got it back she went to bed with it. It sounds fantastic! Thank goodness for musically inclined friends.
Before dinner we needed some fun. The ongoing rain, cold and wind led us to want some play time. We went somewhere we never ever take Maizie. Maizie seemed up for the challenge. Chuck E. Cheese!

Luckily on a week night it was not too crowded. Maizie's eyes glazed over when we first arrived. Sitting down and drinking some sodas while she soaked in the atmosphere helped a bit. Once she got used to the noise and lights it was play time.

Every picture I took Maizie has the look of total concentration. Check out her blog for more photos from tonight. I had fun playing some of the games. The bouncy riding ones made both Joe I feel a little nauseous. Lordy, we must be getting older!

Okay, I could write more but I really need to focus on Nip/Tuck.

Pizza, Scientology and Scrabble

Tonight we went to our neighbor's house for Pizza King pizza. The whole gang was there. Most of the guys sat around discussing Scientology....again. Don't ask me why but this is a popular topic lately. I had to fill Joe Z. in on the latest happenings on Nip/Tuck. That always makes for a lively discussion.

Maizie and Savonna are in the picture above. Savonna had her little apron on and was preparing food for everyone from her toy kitchen. Maizie was totally in to playing the piano. She has shown an interest lately in learning how to play. Her finger strength is so weak though. I think it would be very difficult for her. I worked with her a while on it and she could not push down with her pinkie finger. I guess lessons would help develop finger strength. But then there is the issue of reading music. Ugh. I can't imagine teaching her that at this point. She looks so happy sitting at the piano though.

I set the girls up on Webkinz and Savonna was totally into it. Maizie tried to teach her how to play. Too cute. Maizie was excited because her strawberries were ready to be cultivated. All her koala's hard work has paid off!

I wanted to play Scrabble but felt too lazy to go home and get our game. I asked Brian if he had Scrabble and he said he thought they had an old one somewhere. Boy, it is an old one! The game had the original wooden tiles and wooden tile holders. The box was about ready to fall apart. He even had an old Scrabble dictionary in the box. Cindy is on the left and Brian is on the right. This was the first time ever that Brian had played Scrabble! Can you imagine? I grew up playing Scrabble so it is hard for me to imagine someone having never played it before.

Cindy and Janeen ran down to Cindy's house and made an apple pie and bread pudding. Cindy is famous for her apple pies. We all beg her to make one for us whenever we are together. Apparently, she had made some pies for family at Thanksgiving and everyone was so stuffed they went virtually untouched. This really had Cindy feeling paranoid that she had lost her magic touch with pie. Thankfully for us she needed a confidence boost. We were all more than willing to eat the apple pie and tell her how yummylicious it is. What are friends for? Right!
Here I am playing Scrabble. Joe must have taken this picture when he was playing with my phone. My iPhone was making the rounds. Everyone likes playing with it. I can't blame them. I love the thing. Our ending game was not too impressive. Cindy and I tied! Brian did well for his first game ever. He tried to put one word upside down but other than that he did great. Hopefully he will be willing to play again sometime. Pat, who usually beats our butts at Scrabble was too busy blabbing with the guys to play. Otherwise, I am sure Cindy and I would have lost....big time. You can tell we are so not pros. Our words are all pretty tiny. We try.

Death and Magic

Today was a lazy lazy day. Joe and took turns napping and when we all finally dressed it was after three in the afternoon. Maizie has been very excited about the movie Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium. I went to see this movie with no expectations having seen or read very little about it.

I could not have been more pleased. I loved this movie. The story line was simple, magical and just felt full of joyful playfulness and love. Maizie had the look of a little girl on Christmas morning.

Maizie explained that her favorite part of the movie was when the little boy Eric and the accountant Henry(Mutant) were writing notes back and forth to one another. I knew this was her favorite because when I looked over at her she seemed in awe and had a little grin on her face. I think she enjoyed it because words are so much, "her thing". I have a feeling if she could communicate through writing most of the time she would. She often spells out her answers to our questions and writes us little notes we find around the house. This is especially true when she is upset. She will retreat to her room, write a note and hide it for us to find.

This all reminded me of a post I read recently at Asperger Square 8 by Bev. I see Maizie having many similarities in communication.

In the movie Mr. Magorium owns the magical toy store. He decides it is his time to leave the world. Magorium talks about how he has truly "lived" every day and is looking forward to his next magical adventure. Maizie whispered to me, "Is he going to Heaven? What is going to happen?!" I was so chocked up, tears messing up my makeup that I said, "Ask your Dad." She did not notice me crying but later said she did cry a bit during the movie. Our conversation the other day caused the movie to hit me a bit harder than it would have if we had never discussed death and magic.

This movie also proves that it is still possible to make a rated G movie that everyone can enjoy. I typically get easily bored and antsy in childrens' movies but this one managed to hold my attention. I even put off using the ladies room so I would not miss a second of it.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Check out these snicker doodles Joe made. They were so yummy. Once again they were all eaten in an afternoon. This morning he made the pumpkin pie. At my mom's house we decided to have a taste test since my mom had a pumpkin pie from a popular restaurant here called Hall's. My sister Melissa was the first culprit. With eyes closed she tried one bite of each pie. She said pie 'A' was a bit bland and the crust was okay. On pie 'B' she complained the crust was a bit too crunchy but that the pie had better flavor, more spice. We were all happy to learn that the pie Melissa chose was Joe's! I had never tasted pumpkin pie before so it was my turn next.

I was not thrilled. I thought each pie had the taste and feel of baby food. Apparently I have some textural issues with pumpkin pie. I don't think I will be begging Joe to make pumpkin pie any time soon. No offense Joe. Everyone else loved it.Little Alex above loved the cool whip. She was using the other end of a butter knife to scoop it up. Alex kept saying, "More! Mmmmmmm." She could not get enough of the stuff. Of course for most of us watching her eat cool whip was very entertaining.

We celebrated Alex's and my mom's birthday today. Alex will be two very soon. My mom's birthday was yesterday. Here, all three cousins are seen working, "together" to open Alex's present. It will be interesting to see how much longer she tolerates that!

Tim (Alex's dad) is hiding behind the Target ad. The excitement must have been a bit too much for him.

Maizie and the other kids were in the basement playing pool when Maizie asked Joe if she could pet the deer head. Joe helped her up on the stool and she said, "When I grow up I want to kill deers and turn them into statues." Nice.

I was tagged a few days ago by Pam at Rhett's Journey. I put it off till today since it is fitting for Thanksgiving. I am thankful for so much but here are my top five today.

1. My improving health and reduced pain.

2. For being able to home school Maizie.

3. Of course I am always thankful for family and friends.

4. My husband who is also my best friend.

5. For my fellow bloggers who take the time to read my blog.

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone! Is anyone going shopping on Black Friday?

A Day of Conversations

Conversation on the way to tutoring today.
Maizie: Are we going to have that curly thing that you put fruit in on Thanksgiving?

Marla: Hmmmm....a cornucopia?

Maizie: Yeah...that!

Marla: I don't know where to get one.

Maizie: I do.

Marla: Where?

Maizie: From pilgrims.

Marla: Do you know how cornucopias were made?

Maizie: Yes.

Marla: Will you tell me?

Maizie: Out of skin and then painted.

Marla: Seriously?!

Maizie: I think so.

Marla: Can you eat the cornucopia?

Maizie: No. You have to use it for music.

Marla: How?

Maizie: You blow in it. You make cornucopia music.

Marla: Wow. I should have known that. Those pilgrims are a wacky bunch!

Maizie: (Laughing) Yes.

Conversation in car a while after tutoring.

Maizie: Mom.

Marla: What?

Maizie: Tell me again what happens when people die?

Marla: What do you want to know exactly?

Maizie: How do they go to Heaven?

Marla: Well, I am not sure.

Maizie: Mom! Just tell me the truth okay!

Marla: Ummmm....everyone has a spirit. It is a part within our bodies that hold all our love and energy and what makes us special. It is invisible but it is there. When a person dies that special part leaves their body....floats up to Heaven to be with God and the other people they loved here in the world.

Maizie: So.....(big sigh)....you mean it is magic then?

Marla: Yeah, I guess it is in a way.

(very long pause)

Maizie: I don't ever want to die.

Marla: Everyone dies some day. We don't know when and we can't spend all day obsessing over it. We just have to love everyone the best we can and enjoy our days the best we can. (choking back tears)

Maizie: I don't know what to say when I die.

Marla: I don't think you have to say anything honey. That is one time when you can just relax and be totally......at peace...I guess. I think we should enjoy looking forward to playing and hanging out at Mindy's house right now. (choking back more tears)

Maizie: Can I have that sucker now or what?

Maizie and Maralyn

We were playing at Maralyn's house when a little neighbor girl came over wanting to play.

Maralyn: She will come over after she gets her sister dressed. She was wearing just her underwear.

Maizie: Is she coming over here?

Marlayn: Yup.

Maizie: What does she speak like?

Marlayn: She speaks English!

(Maizie looks at me with great concern.)

Mindy: Maizie, she is very nice. She has a calm, relaxed, quiet voice.

Maizie: (Looking relieved) Okay.

**I love that Mindy knew exactly what Maizie meant by this question. **

Frog. Routine Change. Maizie Loves the iPhone.

This morning started out with my nephew Christian waking me up saying, "Mawa! Watz the passwurd? Watz the passwurd? Mawa!!!!" Ugh. Joe and I gave him a Webkinz frog that he is totally in love with. He came up with the most original and cute name for it. He named it, 'Frog'. At least it will be easy to remember. After getting him signed in and playing Webkinz Maizie made her way to the bathroom all happy and seemingly well.

A few minutes later I go in and find her sitting on the toilet sweating and saying, "Don't get near me! Don't touch me!"I hand her the garbage can and she throws up. Gradually her eyes begin to close and I manage to get her to the couch where she promptly falls asleep. Christian continues talking to Maizie despite her being sound asleep. He is used to her seizures and yet I think he rather think she is just resting and still listening to him than worry that she is not feeling well.

She had been feeling so well. It seemed like days since her last seizure.

For most of the morning she slept while Christian asked me a million questions about Webkinz World. He is working hard to decorate his lilly pad home and was trying to earn enough webkinz money for a tub. All in one morning. I don't think so! It took Maizie days to earn her tub.

We ended up having to cancel tutoring so Maizie could have a more quiet day at home. I was so sad about this since she had finished all of her homework and we worked our buts off getting it done. Luckily, she will be able to make up her session tomorrow.

Mindy came over for a while so Maralyn and Maizie could play. That made the day a bit better for us both. We were able to watch a couple episodes of our show which was a nice break.

This afternoon I was upstairs cleaning up stuff. When I came down Maizie was sitting all cozy with my iPhone. She had this very huge grin on her face. She had managed to look through all the photos on it, scan the phone numbers and watched five you tube videos. I was dumbfounded! Luckily, the videos she found were all dog ones. I think she did a search for dog videos! I am just amazed at how easy the iPhone is to use. Using my cell phone has been one thing Maizie has always struggled with. Now, with the iPhone she will probably become an expert. Now, if I can just get her to be more willing to talk to people on the phone.

Tonight I went to get my hair cut and jumped in the shower once home. Not thinking it was right at bedtime Maizie came into the bathroom yelling, "Whose gonna put me to bed?! Whose gonna put me to bed? I am cold! I have to go to bed! Whose gonna put me to bed?!!!"
Joe had stepped outside with the dogs for just a minute sending her into a 'routine change' melt down. Luckily, once Joe came back inside she allowed him to tuck her in bed. Normally this is a mommy only routine. I am typically not in the shower when it is her bedtime. The hairdresser took longer than normal and such is life. These "changes" in routine are at least easier to manage than they once were. Maizie fell asleep almost instantly. It is amazing how tired her seizures make her.

While I was sitting under the dryer at the hair place I saw an article in a magazine about Heather Kuzmich. She is one of the models on America's Top Model. She has Aspergers syndrome and is from Indiana. It was a brief article pointing out the stereotypical Aspergers traits. I came right home and put the show in to record. I might just make it in time for the finale. Possibly she has been voted out by now I don't know. I am sure there will be reruns. Does anyone know anything about Heather? The last few nights I have had terrible dreams. Dreams with a dead caterpillar and bird inside me. It was quite disturbing. Whenever I have a dream like that I think....gadz...what the hell was that about? What is up with that? I like to think these freaky dreams really don't mean anything. They could be from becoming hooked on the show Dexter.

Anderson Cooper 360 on CNN is about Autism tonight and features Amanda. I mentioned her amazing site in a previous post.

Getting the Truth Out, Chloe Says Something Cute and Ishmael gets Stoned

I have still been soaking in the amazing website called Getting the Truth Out, by Amanda. Mother of Shrek had shared it with everyone on her blog. Amanda is a very gifted writer. I hope everyone takes the time to read all the way through her site. Amanda's words only become more powerful as she goes along.

Today Maizie had Chloe over and they played lots of dress up. I asked Chloe what her favorite part of the school day is. Chloe said, "Chase my boyfriend!" Oh my. Chloe is four and a half and says the cutest things. I questioned further?
Marla: So...Chloe...Who is your boyfriend?
Chloe: Hunter.
Marla: Does he look like the guy in High School Musical
Chloe: No.
Marla: What happens when you catch Hunter?
Chloe: I don't. He is too fast.
Marla: What would happen if you did catch him?
Chloe: I would drag him around!
Maizie: (Laughs hard)

I love Chloe. She is such a sweetie.
We went out to Durnell's tonight for dinner and the DeBrand's. I had been craving one of their hot fudge sundaes for months. Yummy!
After that we went to Cindy and John's house with Pat to hang out and make fun of whatever happened to be on television. Oh, we also watched their cat Ishmael get stoned on cat nip. Wild times! This is what we do when Maizie is at Grandma and Grandpa's house!

Maizie Counts Money!

I have some great news today. Maizie counted quarters at tutoring today. I know this seems like a little thing but truly it is huge. It felt like when she first decoded letters and began reading words after months of working at it. Progress!

Math has been a long, sometimes torturous process for Maizie to learn. At times her tutor and me were wondering if she would ever remember any of it, yet alone "get it". We are still using the Lindamood Bell On Cloud Nine program. Of course we tweak it a lot to Maizie's needs. We are constantly going over and over all of the steps that have led up to this point. If we don't she will forget it easily. The number line, visualizing, greater than and less than, that a number actually symbolises a number of objects and so on. For a while we did a lot of problems written as the words instead of numbers. Like this...four + five = nine. This mainly eased her worry over doing the problem wrong and made her visualize the numbers in a way that worked for her first.
Maizie had just as much anxiety learning to read as she does learning math. Now she can read at a fifth grade level, comprehension is improving but still a struggle. What is truly lovely though is that she loves to read. She reads more than I ever did as a child. I will stop everything to listen to her read. I often wonder if she will be able to do math like she reads. Jeannie seems to think we will only be able to go so far before she won't get it anymore. We both agree that we can't give up. She needs to at least have some skills for daily life. Finally, I feel more hope that this goal will be reached.

It is the visualization that Maizie struggles with. Since starting homeschooling she has improved greatly with this. Once again, I credit this to lower stress, being able to catch up in learning how to play and using the Lindamood Bell Visualization methods. We do lots of work closing our eyes and picturing the numbers in our heads or the sentences from her reading books. Then with the reading she has to answer questions that help her visualize more specifically. I really do see it helping.

Anyway, with money she has always resisted learning it. I think because there was no foundation there for her to build upon. She could not even visualize numbers or what they meant yet alone begin with money. Now, she is slowly getting it. Today counting quarters was more of a memorization step. She almost has pennies, nickels and dimes down so adding in quarters was a huge step. She can't count past amounts of a dollar without confusion but we will get there. I know she does not understand yet that four quarters equals one hundred cents. We are teaching her how to lay out four quarters and count 25, 50, 75, 100 and then match that up with a dollar bill to show that it is the same. It is a long process that will be repeated over and over again.
She can now repeat the counting of quarters on her own which is a start. If I lay out a specific amount of change first she sorts it so it matches. She has a rough time determining the difference between quarters and nickels. Now we point out to separate the "eagles" and not rely on size. Finally, that seems to be working. Then, once all sorted she puts them in order from greatest to least and lastly she counts them. Her tutor Jeannie began slow with just pennies and nickels, then added dimes and today quarters.

For me the most exciting part is that Maizie was doing the work without her voice quivering and turning all whiney like. A sign that her confidence is at an all time low with a task. I gave her a big high five after tutoring and her smile was huge! I am so proud of her. I am also proud of our tutor and need to do something so knows it!

I was telling Joe today that I feel closer than ever to Maizie and I think a lot of it has to do with home schooling. We don't have to compete with her being exhausted from school and stressed from trying hard to fit into an environment that pushed her senses to their limits.

It also helps that she has not had a seizure for a couple weeks. I won't get my hopes up but if life stays calm for a while maybe the seizures will stay away. This will be the first year we won't have to deal with public school holiday chaos. Maizie seemed to soak in that hyper energy and just could not handle it. Maybe this holiday season will be different.
I wanted to let everyone know about an insightful post at Beyond Understanding by Karen. She asked parents of autistic children to answer some questions and then compiled some of the answers. Please check it out.

I Am Wonder Woman!

Elissa at Managing Autism gave me a totally awesome award. I have enjoyed reading her blog Managing Autism for some time now. Elissa's honest and positive outlook always encourages me. She manages to attend many conferences on Autism and loves sharing what she learns with her readers. I really appreciate that. Thank you Elissa for this award! It brings a smile to my day! If only I had a Wonder Woman costume to wear all day!

I would like to pass on this award to Elizabeth who writes Screw Bronze. I enjoy reading Elizabeth's blog because her posts shine with honesty and determination despite all the challenges she faces with her health. She brings humor, wit and a joy to her blogs that I admire. I also like her adventures with feeding the squirrels since I loves squirrels myself and wish one would sit on my lap!
I am going to extend this award on to a second person who has always been my Super Woman since I was a kid, my little sister Melissa. Her blog Meljo is just a 'baby blog' but she is working hard on it despite starting a new full time job as a nurse. Melissa works with children who are fighting cancer. She is also a mom and adjusting to a new neighborhood in a new town! I admire her so much. Not to mention her blog brings a smile to my face. Since she is so busy right now she can not blog as much as me but her blog is still awesome. :) This is a picture of me on the left with Mel on the right.

The Mess that is Maizie's American Girl Doll

The joys of the American Girl Doll! When I look through the Americal Girl Doll catalog I am always in awe of the beautiful arranged sets with the soft luxurious hair. I picture Maizie playing all sweet and angelic like with her doll Josefina. We gave Maizie the Josefina doll as a way to celebrate her heritage a few years ago. For this, I like the doll. I must also say they are very durable.

However, I am repulsed by a rats nest head of hair, long strands of it sticking all over the outfits. The dogs are terrified of the thing. Possibly, it looks like a shrunken child in black and white doggie vision.

Or maybe they see her like the little girl from The Ring. Yikes!

Keeping up the hair of an American Girl Doll is a part time job. I failed to buy the hair care kit so maybe I am to blame for this mess of a doll. After Maizie went to bed I sat down with an old comb and went to work...again. I filled the garbage can with hair, covered my carpet and chair with hair and the doll still has a not so nice thick head of snarled hair. Finally, I got wise and braided it the best I could . Granted, I also did not purchase the twenty five minute DVD on caring for your doll's hair. My hair skills surely suffer as a result.

Thank goodness Maizie prefers her Bitty Baby. She is bald and oh how beautiful she looks. Except where Maizie wrote the word 'this' on her leg. But, that is one thing that makes me love that baby doll all the more.

Doing Nothing

We were all lying around....bored. Especially the doggies. It is rare to catch Stella bored. She looks truly miserable in the shot below. Rainy days suck! Darwin sleeps whenever and wherever he can. He has become a very lazy dog. Look at his tiny white teeth above. Too cute!I tried to shake things up a bit by trying out my new i phone camera. The dogs did not seem interested at all. It was a good thing that they were lying still and all lazy like. I like all the feet in the picture below. You can also tell in this shot that Darwin is not getting any loving from Maizie...just Stella. Oh, how Darwin likes to pout. Maizie and Stella are totally in to cuddling now. My non cuddly puppy has become very cuddly and we are all very happy. The only difficult part is making sure both puppies get all the "Maizie time" they need.

Maizie and Stella have grown quite close and enjoy lounging around with Darwin doing nothing. We have much to learn from our furry friends. Doing absolutely nothing is one lesson we like to mix into our daily home school routine.

Over all I am loving the i phone. The camera leaves a bit to be desired but as far as a phone camera goes it does okay. It at least will give me my "fix" without having to get out my rebel.

Please Pray for Little Nik!

Please take some time to say some prayers for a wonderful little boy named Nik. He is struggling with some undiagnosed health issues. Nik has cerebral palsy, a seizure disorder, autism and other increasing health concerns. His family is working hard to find him the help he needs. Concerns are growing and the family is understandably exhausted. Please pray for Nik's parents and siblings to stay close and love one another. Pray that they will all have restful sleep and the energy to do what is needed for Nik. Please visit Nik's blog and offer your support via comments and promise of prayer.

Little Miss M's Future??

Today we paid the price for some time away from our daughter Maizie. She had a great time spending the night at my sister's house and playing with her cousin. They even went to see a movie together. For Maizie one of these events is pushing her to the limit, add in a movie and we are just asking for trouble.
Joe and I enjoyed our alone time. We both went to pick up Maizie feeling positive, relaxed and looking forward to a quiet evening with our girl. We create this positive day dream every time we pick Maizie up. Has it ever went the way we think it will? Never. But, over time it has improved. Like most children with autism, Maizie has a difficult time transitioning from my sister's home back to ours. Luckily, we have advanced from the melt down beginning upon first seeing her. Now, she will hold back until she is safe in the car. She will put on her shoes and say her goodbyes. A major accomplishment! It used to be that I would have to carry her kicking and screaming to the car. As she got bigger, dragging her to the car was a better description.
Once to the car she would sit behind the drivers seat screaming and throwing anything she could get her hands on for a good thirty minutes. Over time we just got used to planning extra time for her melt downs. They were not pleasant and my blood pressure would raise immensely. A few times I would crack, pull over in the car and scream some myself. Mind you, this was after ongoing lack of sleep, lack of support, lack of everything. Now, it is not so bad. She at least will usually buckle herself into the car and I can continue driving while she screams a bit and cries.

The rest of the evening is filled with mood swings. Joe and I also get a big bump back into reality. Maizie goes from happy moments to whining and screaming over issues that are typically beyond our comprehension. Joe and I walk on egg shells as we try to avoid upsetting her further. I pray for the clock to move faster and bedtime to get here....NOW!
For the next few hours we will be pushed to our limits. Maizie will test our patience in every way possible. It is all I can do to not run out of the house and just keep running. This thought is not there as much as it used to be. I would always be imagining just jumping in my car and driving away, only returning when Joe could assure me Maizie was calm, relaxed and happy. Joe had similar thoughts. As parents we don't feel good having them but find them understandable considering the stress and exhaustion Maizie brings to our lovely threesome. We love her dearly and are thankful for the blessing that is Maizie. Believe me.

As you know though from reading my blog... every day is not like today. Maizie will hopefully balance out and the morning will bring a better day for Maizie. A better day for me and Joe.

When Maizie was about three we took her to a child psychiatrist for the first time. She was given the world's longest diagnosis. As an infant Maizie was removed from our home during the adoption process. We had seen her through her pyloric stenosis surgery and a long hospitalization. But, the adoption had not been finalized and the birth father entered the picture. This separation was torture for us and I do believe it had a profound and long lasting affect on Maizie. The psychiatrist said that Maizie suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder due to the disruption she had from her birth mother, to us, to foster care and back to us again. All within the first year of life. We were told, "She is a baby. All they need is love, food and warmth. She will be fine." To this day I strongly disagree. Maizie missed some of the most important developmental milestones for an infant. She missed the gazing during feeding, the security of constant caregivers and the initial building of trust during those first few months.

Joe and I blame ourselves for much of that. We think, what if we could have found the right lawyer, found the right loop hole faster, what if we would not have given in, what if...what if....? I don't know how much of Maizie's issues are experience related versus her genetic build? I guess we will never know. Does it even really matter? Not a day goes by when I don't remember what it was like to lose her and think I would never see her again. I try to block it all out but it is always there. Taunting me, saying, "Be thankful. Be thankful for this child. She is only yours for a time."

More recently we are moving into a new phase with Maizie. Soon she will be a tween, bringing a whole new package of struggles, triumphs and changes to her life and ours.
I am reading so many blogs of children suffering through sleepless night, endless health questions, tantrums that make most children's fits look like angelic behavior and it has me remembering how far we have come. My heart aches for these families. I know how tired they are, how lonely they are. But, I also know how far they will come...they just can't see it but tey have to believe they will go far. Maizie has far surpassed what I thought initially possible for her. Now, I expect she will far surpass what I think is possible for her future.

Now that we are moving into the tween years I am so ready to move on and see Maizie meet and surpass the challenges waiting for her. At the age of nine Maizie finally sleeps through the night. I often sit and try to figure out the years before Maizie may be ready to move out and be on her own. If she is at a kindergarten level in math at age nine, then maybe by the time she is twenty one she will have the skills to live on her own. All of these thoughts are new to me and seem strange. I go from wanting her with me constantly to wondering if she will ever be able to live a more normal life...away from me... on her own. I know my parents went through similar feelings and worries with my older sister Marie. Now, she is living on her own with two sons. She does get a great deal of support from my parents but at the same time is this how far they dreamed she would go? I wonder how they feel about it and what their worries are for the next stage of my sister's life. For those of you new to my blog my sister had a stroke when she was six, is paralyzed on one side, deaf in one ear and blind in one eye. She is an amazing person and one of my best friends. She has surpassed odds unlike anyone I have ever known. How did my parents do it? I was there for most of it and I still don't know exactly. I think my mom would say through faith, through love, through lots of hard, exhasuting work and sacrifices.

What is in store for my little girl Maizie? I wish I knew. This is where my faith comes in. I don't know why she has to suffer and stay in sick so many days? Why to function normally requires medications most parents would not dream of putting their children on? Why she can't carry on normal conversations with children her same age? I don't know why walking two blocks makes her legs hurt. I don't know why she can't stand lights, changes or find her words to speak. They call it a chromosome disorder, autism, seizure disorder, PTSD...but to me this is all just Maizie and I love every bit of her. So this means I love even her weaknesses. But, I want so much more for her. I want her to be able to be healthy and happy and live a long life full of love. That, I guess is what all parents want for their children. So, in a way we are no different from any other family. Our challenges are just a bit out of the ordinary.

I know we are all people of different faiths blogging into the cyber world. But, this much I know...without something bigger to hold on to, without something bigger to spill my guts to I would not have survived. Find your faith and hold onto it tight. Faith makes everything tolerable. Faith makes me stronger so I don't run away. Sometimes that is the best I can ask for. Other times faith brings me to my knees and I can see everything as good.
